Relief pitcher Calvin Medlock was called up to Durham from AA Montgomery yesterday, presumably as the next contestant on the Dewon for a Day reality show. Chris Mason appeared earlier this week.

Like Mason, Medlock pitched in Durham last season, going 3-3 over 41 appearances (63 innings) with a 4.57 ERA. His K/BB ratio was scary, 40/32, but so far this year, he’s been much better for the Biscuits: a 3.52 ERA in 23 appearances with 37 strikeouts and only four walks in 30 2/3 innings. He also leads the team with 13 saves—that’s nearly as many as Winston Abreu and Dale Thayer combined.

Medlock’s arrival means that manager Charlie Montoyo now has three closers on his club. Montoyo is usually pretty good about getting the new guy right into a game, but the rain will have to cooperate for that to happen tonight. If there’s baseball, James Houser starts for the Bulls.
