Just when Sidney Lowe looked as though he was finally getting some help for N.C. State’s backcourt next season … 2009 commit Lorenzo Brown has failed to qualify and will attend Hargrave for a year to improve his academics, according to several recruiting sites and 850 the Blog.

Brown, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Roswell, Ga., is an explosive scorer and was the cornerstone of the Wolfpack’s top 15 recruiting class in the nation for next season.

The Wolfpack have seriously lacked great guard play since the graduation of Engin Atsur in 2007 and return junior Javier Gonzalez, who has shown flashes of brilliance at point guard but overall struggled with consistency.

State also returns guard Julius Mays, who as a freshman last season stole a bit of point guard time from Gonzalez before being benched the last fourth of the season. Mays did return for the last game of the season, scoring 18 points against Maryland in an ACC tournament loss.

With the current rules in place, it’s easy to wonder if Brown will ever wear the Wolfpack uniform. After a year at Hargrave, it’s entirely possible it would be easier for Brown to jump into the 2010 NBA Draft.
