We showed you what it looked like when The Pinhook’s Kym Register and a few friends showed up to the North Carolina Department of Revenue Friday to pay off the club’s $80,000 tax debt. With that issue resolved, the beloved downtown Durham performance space can get back to doing what it does best— fostering an environment of community and collaboration.
There’s no better example of this spirit than Thursday night’s “The Pinhook Is Off The Hook” benefit concert, co-presented by Art of Cool Fest and Moogfest. Originally intended to help rescue The Pinhook from the red, all proceeds from tomorrow night’s show will now be redirected to the nonprofit empowerment organization, Girls Rock NC. The show includes two Art of Cool affiliates—jazz jammers Zoocrü and alternative soulster Shirlette Ammons—and Durham beat bandit Trandle, a Moogfest 2016 artist.
This is not the first time that AOCF and Moogfest have collaborated—last year, Moogfest sponsored a workshop portion of AOCF’s Innovate Your Cool conference, and they copresented a Kamasi Washington show with Hopscotch. With both festivals approaching, it’s refreshing to see these two festival factions working with each other rather than competing for the rights to be the Bull City’s preeminent music event.
