At the end of February, the Chapel Hill garage rock trio Flesh Wounds quietly released three new songs online. A brisk, hooky, in-the-red run, the songs nod to surf-rock icons The Trashmen through a barrage of Guitar Wolf scuzz. Strong in structure and sound, they realize the promise of 2012’s raw cassette release Abrasions, Abcesses, and Amputations.
So it should be little surprise that this quietly released bundle is no mere stopgap EP. Instead, these are preview tracks from a forthcoming full-length due sometime this summer. And according to singer/guitarist Montgomery Morris, they aren’t even the best of the batch.
Tonight, Flesh Wounds play an early all-ages show at All Day Records. Consider this another low-stakes teaser for what promises to be one of the year’s stronger local albums. Also on the bill are surf-punks Mayday!, who come from the strong and idiosyncratic upstate New York punk scene. Their deft union of fuzz-blasted surf guitars, brash garage rock and hook-heavy punk has been documented so far only on an EP and a split with the excellent Brown Sugar.
The show starts at 7:00 p.m. It’s free, but donations for the touring band are expected.
