A series of intriguing local pairings began Saturday night at The ArtsCenter, in one of the Carrboro room’s intimate theaters. Experimental rock outfit Jenks Miller & Rose Cross NC joined guitarist Daniel Bachman for a two-hour performance. Both sets happened in the pit area in front of the stage, each performer at eye-level. With couches and easy chairs surrounding the musicians and on the stage itself, concertgoers could get close and watch two of the area’s best.

Bachman’s set featured new material from an upcoming Three Lobed Recordings release, centered on the theme of water. Each of the longer untitled tunes had a very narrative movement, allowing the listener to visualize a scene. Jenks Miller and his recent project Rose Cross NC followed. Miller and company entered extended improvisational portions for both of their pieces. Acclaimed trombonist Jeb Bishop joined the band, adding flair to Miller’s heavy riffs.
