Music film series
The ArtsCenter in Carrboro has a spiffy new screen and a new music movie series thanks to film guys Tom Laney and Matt Hedt. The duo will show three films this month starting on Tuesday, Feb. 7 with Instrument, a collaboration between filmmaker Jem Cohen and Fugazi. Up after that is Fearless Freaks, Bradley Beesley’s portrait of The Flaming Lips. The month closes with Wattstax, part-essay/ part-record of the 1972 Watts Summer Festival featuring Isaac Hayes, the Bar-Kays, the Staples Singers and a young Richard Pryor.
Shows for Instrument are at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Freaks and Wattstax are at 8 p.m. Tickets are $3. Note: They sell wine and beer there.
Cyber Scene
“This site is here for you: the fans, the musicians, the scene,” says the front page of www.kingofthescene.com, a new Brewery-centric Web site that offers information on bands and their fans in and around the Triangle. Over 50 people have registered for the site since it opened on Jan. 26, and its message board is thriving with almost 300 posts in its first week. The site’s central resources includes a list of shows–mainly focused on hardcore and some screamo stuff, with the occasional indie rock or hip hop nod–and a list of new releases from some of the most recognizable names on that circuit. The site even features an intriguing “Downloads” section, but it’s empty at this point.
Sound nods
Since opening our online poll for the Indy Music Awards around midnight last Wednesday, more than 2,000 online ballots have been cast and stacks of paper ballots have been arriving daily. Voting ends Feb. 18, so you still have plenty of time to give a nod to your favorite Triangle musicians, either online at www.indyweek.com or through paper ballots, which can now be found in record stores and music venues throughout the Triangle.
