The NCAA has yet to rule on whether or not the HB 2 repeal deal signed by Governor Roy Cooper Thursday is good enough to satisfy the basketball gods, but the Atlantic Coast Conference took little time to put North Carolina back in the competition for hosting rights to championship events.

That’s not exactly an official confirmation of games to be played in the Old North State, but it seems like the Atlantic Coast Conference is satisfied. The NCAA ruling could be a bit trickier. From the INDY:

(Whether this deal actually satisfies the NCAA is another matter. The NCAA’s statement back in September cited the following reasons for bailing on North Carolina—among others—which this new bill does not appear to rectify: “North Carolina laws invalidate any local law that treats sexual orientation as a protected class or has a purpose to prevent discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individuals. North Carolina has the only statewide law that makes it unlawful to use a restroom different from the gender on one’s birth certificate, regardless of gender identity.”)

And whether or not the NCAA or the NBA (HB 2 cost Charlotte the 2017 All-Star Game) are satisfied has been widely discussed by pundits on both sides of the aisle. From ESPNW:

Rewarding the North Carolina legislature’s lazy effort would set a dangerous precedent for what these leagues will tolerate moving forward. For example, Texas is considering SB6, a bill that regulates bathrooms in a similar anti-trans fashion as HB2, and there are many anti-LGBTQ bills pending elsewhere. Backing HB142 will do nothing to quell this wave. It does the opposite, in fact — fanning the flames of anti-LGBTQ movements across the country.

If the NCAA, NBA and ACC are to abide by the values they have espoused in the press and pride parades (looking at you, NBA), they must stand united with LGBTQ people in opposition to this law. It’s not a mistake that the major LGBTQ organizations, including Human Rights Campaign, Athlete Ally and the LGBTQ Task Force, are opposed to this compromise.

The NCAA, ACC and NBA have all publicly stated that they endorse LGBTQ equality through their opposition to the discrimination laced in HB2. Now is their chance to prove it.

McCrory, the guy who made bathroom birth certificates the hill he chose to die on, thought that it was just rad how Governor Cooper and the liberals got played.

“The good news is this, the HRC lost the battle. With their resources and power and money, and they’re trying to get some other corporations to help support them in the battle that they’ve lost—the usual players out in California. The fact of the matter is, they did not get a full repeal of HB 2.”

Guess we’ll have to wait and see if what Cooper did deliver is good enough to save UNC and Duke’s precious home-court advantage. Because that’s the whole point, right?
