Raleigh’s Bickett Gallery will hold An Evening of Modern Art and Music Friday, Oct. 18, featuring not only wood sculptures by Don Matthias, but also screenings of his short films and music by the Tyson Rogers Quartet (a band whose leader has been described by the Boston Phoenix as having a “nervous, twittering energy and [a] quirky notion of the blues”). Matthias’ sculptures, made from castoff wood, nails and string (pictured right), serve as set pieces for many of his Super8 films. The jazz quartet features Mahlon Hoard on reeds, Rick Lassiter on double bass, Rob Koegler on drums along with the aforementioned leader, pianist Tyson Rogers. Mix in glasses of wine from Bickett’s month-old Art Bar, and you’re evening is made. Doors open at 8 p.m.; show begins at 9 p.m. Cover is $4. Call 836-5358 for details.
