During Black History Month, Internationalist Books is dedicating the last three Mondays of February to three civil rights films by Spike Lee. While last week they showed Lee’s widely-distributed Malcolm X, this Monday they’ll showcase the less widely seen, yet no less acclaimed 4 Little Girls, a documentary made for HBO. The powerful film retells the story of the infamous Sept. 15, 1963 bombing of a Black Baptist church in Birmingham, Ala., in which one 11-year-old and three 14-year-old choir girls were killed. The bombing elicited and continues to elicit a very visceral response, causing what former anchorman Walter Cronkite refers to in the film as an “awakening.” Lee brings together interviews with family members of the victims, civil rights leaders and witnesses, with archival footage and photos to reconstruct the events. See the emotionally stirring documentary and experience your own awakening. See “Special Showings” for details.
