Last November, as well documented by the rousing “Green Team” video below, Joe Green won a seat on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Election.
“We’re hopefully going to work hard for the school board and do a great job,” he says in the video, a thank you to voters and his campaign team.
Today Green announced that he’s going to work hard and do a great job elsewhere.
He turned in his resignation letter, leaving a hole on the seven-member board and three years on his term, in favor of a post at Marquette University.
Green, who in November sold voters on his experience as UNC’s Upward Bound director working with at-risk youth and inspiring them to go to college, will serve as Marquette’s executive director of educational opportunity programs.
“I have had the distinct pleasure of working with our community, families and students here in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area for the past four years, serving one year on our board. I also received great satisfaction from my daily interactions with the district’s administration, faculty and staff,” he writes in his resignation letter.
School board Chairman Mike Kelley released the requisite thank you, best of luck statement, and the board will consider its next steps at its Oct. 7 meeting. They are able to appoint a member to fill Green’s vacant post until the next school board election, which is set for 2011.
The community already has four seats to elect in that race, when terms expire for Kelley, Vice Chairwoman Jamezetta Bedford, Mia Day Burroughs and Annetta Streater.
In 2009, Green finished third in a six-way race for three positions. He earned 16.27 percent of the vote. MaryAnne Gucciardi was the first runner-up with 14.8 percent, just 371 votes shy of Green’s mark.
