Hearty congratulations are in order for our film critic, Godfrey Cheshire, for his first-place win at the annual Association of Alternative Newsweekly Awards. At a ceremony earlier this month in New Orleans, Cheshire won first place for Arts Criticism for newspapers with circulations below 54,000.
“Great name, and the chops to go with it!” the judges said, in describing their choice. “Wry, sly and smart film criticism: In reviews ranging from Redford to Von Trier to Erroll Morris, Cheshire displayed a wickedly aphoristic delight in language … wed to exceptionally expansive senses both of the sweep of film history and of the breadth of the medium’s social resonances and responsibilities.”
We couldn’t agree more!
