On his first visit to Afghanistan in 1986, at the peak of the Afghan-Soviet war, Dr. Larry Goodson grew a beard halfway down his chest, dressed in a tunic and baggy pants, and carried a Beretta 9mm pistol. On later visits, he witnessed the hair-raising rise of the Taliban. The UNC-Chapel Hill alumnus and Mt. Olive native, who made lengthy visits to Afghanistan in ’86, ’92 and ’97, has chronicled his experiences in the book Afghanistan’s Endless War, a New York Times bestseller since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
