Kathryn Stripling Byer</p>
Peace College—Poet laureate of North Carolina since early last year, Kathryn Stripling Byer’s fourth book of poems, Coming to Rest, was released earlier this year to high praise. The book takes its name and central theme from a Seamus Heaney verse: “We come back emptied/ To nourish and resist/ the words of coming to rest.” Byer, a Cullowhee resident and National Endowment for the Arts fellow, reads tonight at Kenan Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Kings—Jazz often moves the soul most when it is fearless or even violent in its presentation. Triangle locals Crowmeat Bob, Mike Isenberg and Phil Martelli push that boundary with their trio The Nights (aptly named after crime novelist Jim Thompson’s starkest work). Athens, Ga., improvisor Dan Nettles picks up here with some locals, unhinging things a bit more.
