Jerryfest 2002 is a full-day music and arts festival that’ll take place at the quaint mill town of Bynum, located on the Haw River. The event, which is also a benefit for the UNC TEACCH Living and Learning Center for Autism, features a who’s who of local talent, headlined by our own Tony Award-winning Red Clay Ramblers, along with Southern Culture on the Skids, Trailer Bride, Thad Cockrell, Hobex, gospel music, the Paper Hand Puppet Intervention folks and more. Allen & Son’s Barbecue, pizza and food supplied by other area eateries will be available, as well as henna painting and art displays. Jerryfest grew out of the Bynum General Store Front Porch Music Series, a way for storeowner Jerry Partin, whose store has suffered competition from major chains and convenience stores, to offer his patrons something extra and bring the Bynum community together on a regular basis. The series also offers artists a casual, down-home environment to try out new material. The fest is Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Bynum Ballpark. Tickets are available at the door, Schoolkids Records or by calling 542-1858. –Angie Carlson
