Raleigh voters on Tuesday gave strong support Tuesday to a $206.7 million transportation bond, with revenue going to more than 20 projects designed to improve streets and to shore up connections in the city’s growing network of transportation modes.
With 91 of 108 precincts reporting, the referendum was enjoying nearly seventy-three percent approval.
The bond projects cover a broad range of Raleigh, including an $8.6 million improvement of Old Wake Forest Road, the final of three segments being widened on Tryon Road, and a Poole Road project that would include “widening the street to a four-lane median-divided section and the installation of curb & gutter, sidewalks, bicycle facilities, streetlights, and landscaping,” the city said.
With surveys showing a strong citizen preference for managing growth and traffic, the referendum got a good reception from voters Tuesday.
Opponents including Republican mayoral candidate Paul Fitts opposed the bond as unnecessary expense that would increase the city’s debt load.
The bond revenues would let the city take part in several projects with the state Department of Transportation, make streetscape improvements in various parts of town, install sidewalks on major corridors and in neighborhoods, and provide safe routes to school for walking and biking.
Ten million dollars in bond funding will pay for the extension of West Street under the NC Railroad Corridor between Martin and Cabarrus streets, making a connection to the new Raleigh Union Station, as well as matching a local match for requested federal funding.
