Triangle homeowners interested in saving some money on their winter utility bills, and in supporting more sustainable forms of energy, can check out the Triangle Tour of Solar Homes this weekend in southern Orange and northern Chatham counties. The nine houses on the tour feature a variety of innovative techniques for getting the most from the sun’s rays–large, south-facing windows, specially designed overhangs to interact with the sun’s seasonal path, and concrete floors to provide thermal mass. The tour takes place Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration and a free solar seminar will be held Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Dreyfus Auditorium at the Research Triangle Institute campus on E. Institute Road. For more information or to preregister, visit www.ncsolar.org or call 832-7601. —Zach Hoskins
