Incumbent N.C. Representative W.A. “Winkie” Wilkins beat out two Democratic contenders Tuesday night in the race to keep his seat in N.C. House District 55, which spans Durham and Person counties.
Wilkins, who lives in Roxboro in Person County, won just over 60 percent of the vote, compared to 35.65 percent for Durham’s Fred Foster Jr., and 4.29 percent for R. Miles Standish, who had initially considered withdrawing from the race. (Read more in the previously published Indy endorsements.)
Foster saw a strong turnout in Durham, winning 63.36 percent of the vote in his home county. Wilkins saw similar success in his home county of Person. Wilkins will go on to face Republican challenger Larry Yarborough in the fall election to N.C. House.
The Republican primary in N.C. House District 30 resulted in no surprises. Jason Chambers and Randy Stewart were on the ballot, but several weeks before the primary, Stewart conceded the race to Chambers. Chambers will face incumbent state Rep. Paul Luebke in the fall election.
