This Friday, internationally lauded teen climate activist Greta Thunberg will participate in a rally in Charlotte as part of her American tour.
Thunberg will be at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center from noon to 2:00 p.m. Friday alongside local youth climate strikers and activists Mary Ellis Stevens, Kate Harrison and Lucia Paulsen, among others. The rally will take place rain or shine.
At age fifteen, Thunberg began a global movement of students against climate change after holding a “school strike for the climate,” sign outside of the Swedish Parliament as a call for stronger action against global warming. Her bold, fearless activism encouraged students to engage in similar protests across the globe under the name “Fridays for Future.”
This summer Greta (who refuses to travel by plane because of the environmental impact) journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean in a ship for two weeks before reaching New York City in August. Upon arrival, she scolded President Donald Trump, “to just to listen to the science, and he obviously doesn’t do that.”
At the U.N.’s Climate Action Summit in September, she told world leaders, “we’ll be watching you.”
“For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you’re doing enough when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight,” Greta said.
