Author Talk with Anthony Aycock: Book Banning on Trial

6 p.m. | Chapel Hill Public Library
Anthony Aycock, Legislative Librarian for the North Carolina General Assembly, speaks about the Supreme Court Case at the center of his new book, Just Plain Filthy: The Story Behind Book Banning’s Trial of the Century. The 1982 trial, Island Trees School District v. Pico, stems from an instance of school library censorship and is (somehow) the only case on book banning that the US Supreme Court has ever heard. Registration is required for this event.

River Shook album release show

8 p.m. | Cat’s Cradle, Chapel Hill
If you aren’t bouncing around Good Moon Festival music events on Friday—and are perhaps pining for slightly quieter alt-country pastures—then River Shook’s album release show is a good bet. Shook, formerly of Sarah Shook & the Disarmers, has been a vanguard of the Triangle’s music scene for over a decade, but this release is their debut solo effort. Moody North Carolina folk act The Dead Tongues opens the night; tickets are $20.

Also on tap: Greek beer and wines, pantry items, mosaics, dancing, the church’s community cookbook, and an “attic treasures sale.” Local Ukrainian artisans will also have crafts for sale, with proceeds supporting Ukraine relief efforts. This event takes place on Saturday and Sunday.

Everything Happens Live With Kate Bowler

7 p.m. | The Carolina Theatre
If you aren’t already familiar with the work of Kate Bowler, a writer, speaker, and professor at Duke University, you may have seen a rose-encircled mural in Brightleaf Square with a quote from her: “Life is so beautiful. Life is so hard.” Bowler, a cancer survivor, is known for such keep-it-real truisms, and her podcast Everything Happens, which unpacks narratives around success and failure, is no exception. On this live taping, Bowler is joined by Tim Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics. Tickets start at $40.

Sarah Edwards is culture editor of the INDY, covering cultural institutions and the arts in the Triangle. She joined the staff in 2019 and assumed her current role in 2020.
