Until today, you had to be a subscriber of Merge Records’ sold-out Born Under a Good Sign vinyl record series to hear “Evacuate.” It’s the first new song from Durham’sย Joyero, the solo project of Wye Oak’s Andy Stack, since his August debut album, Release the Dogs. In May, the track appeared on a split seven-inch with Washington, D.C. punk band Gauche, which also released a well-received full-length debut on Merge over the summer.
But late subscribers and analog deniers, rejoice: Today, Merge released both tracks to digital platforms, and a portion of sales will benefitย Honor the Earth, a Native-led environmental organization. Both bands wrote their songs in the wake of hurricanes hitting close to home; Stack considers the emotional valences of evacuation, something with which North Carolinians are increasingly familiar, in a subliminally urgent track that has shades of The xx’s Oliver Sim, but with brighter, bouncier, burlier synths.ย
Find Gauche’s “Body Count” here and Joyero’s “Evacuate” here or stream it below. Joyero, currently on tour in Europe, has a back-to-Durham date with Fruit Bats at Motorco on November 20.
