On Saturday, March 19, 2011, more than 2,000 citizens took vows to Marry Durham, which included promises to protect the city and its reputation and to honor its diversity. “Today we marry each other, beyond race, beyond gender, beyond class, beyond sexual orientation, beyond religion,” said “Preacha Man” Carl Kenney, an ordained minister who conducted the 10-minute ceremony.

According to Marry Durham organizers, the event grossed about $25,000, well above their goal of $12,000. Proceeds from the event will go to the Eno River Association, Latino Community Development Center, Scrap Exchange and Walltown Children’s Theatre along with Genesis Home.
