It’s a yearly ritual as predictable as the solstice: new phone books. Instead of tossing these mighty tomes in the trash or stashing them in the desk (if you still have that 1988 directory, it’s time to move on), either place them in your curbside recycling bin or take them to a year-round recycling facility.

Durham and Orange counties accept directories in recycling bins. Wake County does not, although in the spring it holds an annual phone book roundup. You can drop them off at Wake’s recycling centers at 9016 Deponie Drive, Raleigh, or 6000 Old Smithfield Road, Apex.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 660,000 tons of telephone directories are distributed annually, but only 120,000 tons are recycled.
