Some wholesome content to break up the less-than-so: Wake County Animal Center had a record-breaking year for adoptions and rescues in 2019, with an 11 percent increase in four-legged friends finding their forever homes.

Wake saw 4,288 pet adoptions last yearโ€“over 400 more than 2018โ€“and 1,933 fosters.

Wake County Animal Center director Dr. Jennifer Frederico credits the generosity and sympathy of the countyโ€™s pet lovers for 2019โ€™s exceptional numbers.

โ€œThe community really stepped up to support the shelter in 2019,โ€ Frederico says. โ€œWe have so many generous and sympathetic animal lovers in Wake County, and we couldnโ€™t do it without their help.โ€

More adoptions have allowed the shelter to avoid space-based euthanization for over three years. In addition, pet spaying and neutering also broke a record with 3,357 procedures, nearly 300 more than in 2018.

Hereโ€™s to spreading more fur baby love in 2020, and shattering even more records by adopting and fostering. In the meantime, check out some of these sweeties still up for adoption:
