Beth Brockman, left, was among the homeless advocates joining Carl Bittner, right, and other panhandlers to protest Durham's new ordinance outlawing the practice on "busy streets." Bittner was surprised to find supporters at his usual intersection of U.S. 15-501 and Mt. Moriah Road, but he was glad for their company and "good looks." He joked with the supporters about the lessons they had yet to learn about panhandling. Durham Police officers arrived and distributed informational sheets about the new ordinance, then left the intersection.
