Good morning, readers.

At its meeting next Monday, the Durham City Council is expected to vote on the city’s budget for the next fiscal year. Last week, the council held its second and final budget hearing

The hearing was unusually muted. City workers, including solid waste employees, attended to make a last bid for higher pay, and advocates for Legal Aid and the city’s guaranteed basic income program made their pitches for continued funding.

Affordability, and the lack of it for many Durham residents, was a recurring theme at the meeting.

“Our most essential workers are still not receiving the wages that they need to be able to fully live and enjoy the city that they’re giving their all to,” said Shanise Hamilton, an organizing coordinator with Durham Beyond Policing speaking on behalf of solid waste workers.

But some speakers, including firefighters and transit advocates pleased with the city’s follow-through on implementing a Vision Zero program, had words of gratitude for the council for listening to their concerns and acting on them.

Once the council passes the budget, members will go on break for the summer until August 5.

Have a good Monday.
