Good morning, readers.

In Hillsborough last night, the Orange County School Board had a late addition to the agenda: A vote to recognize the resignation of board member Jennifer Moore, who did not attend the meeting.

“Do I have a motion to accept this item?” asked chair Anne Purcell.

For 13 awkward seconds, the six remaining members stared each other down in front of the audience of 20 concerned attendees.

Carrie Doyle, who ran on a slate with Moore in the March election, finally broke the silence:

“I have really enjoyed working with my colleague Dr. Moore…she is a lady of great character, great attention to students and staff, and out of respect for her wishes, I move that we accept her resignation,” said Doyle.

Moore’s resignation comes three weeks before she will remain on the ballot in a runoff election against board member Bonnie Hauser to keep her seat. Moore has not responded to requests for comment, and it’s not immediately clear if she plans to continue her campaign.

On Friday, the News & Observer published a report raising questions about Moore’s doctoral degree alongside the news of her resignation. The paper contracted Bellevue University in Nebraska and Bellevue College in Washington state and was told neither had a record of Moore attending or earning a doctoral degree. But it confirmed she earned master’s degrees in business administration in 2014 and performance improvement in 2016 from Grantham University in Arkansas.

Orange Country Strong, a public schools advocacy group that supported Moore in the March election, posted publicly on Facebook that “the story in the N and O is a rinse and repeat of the last election. #JimCrow.”

If Moore wins the seat and declines to take it, the new iteration of the board would have to agree on an appointment to replace her. That process that may prompt some more uncomfortable silences in Hillsborough.

Last night, though, the board members accepted the resignation and quickly moved on to conversations about redistricting and AI.

We’ll have more on the story as it unfolds. Have a good Tuesday.
