The Carolina Mudcats scored all the runs they would need in the first four innings and then hung on late, beating the Jacksonville Suns 6-5 at Five County Stadium to win their third straight game.

Devin Mesoraco led the Mudcats with a homer and a double for three RBI as they outhit the Suns 9-8.

Denis Phipps added a homer and a single for Carolina while Jose Castro doubled and singled.

Matt Fairel (2-3) was the winning pitcher, going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits, striking out five against one walk. Jerry Gil, the fourth Carolina pitcher of the night, earned his third save. Wade Korpi (0-2) took the loss.

Tim Torres homered and doubled for the Suns, while Ryan Curry also homered.

Game 5 of the six-game set is Friday night.
