North Carolina made a strong showing in the semifinal round of the James Beard Award announcements, but after last night’s ceremony, the state went home empty handed.
Only Ashley Christensen’s Death & Taxes made it into the final round, which was announced in March. At last night’s awards ceremony in Chicago, Death & Taxes was in the running for “Best New Restaurant” but was beat out by Shaya, an Israeli-inspired New Orleans establishment.
Christensen won the James Beard Award for best chef: Southeast in 2014. This year, that honor went to Tandy Wilson of Nashville’s City House.
