Last year, the Carrboro-based musician Anne-Claire Niver—who performs as Anne-Claire—released her second full-length album, a roving meditation on the loss of her grandmother titled I Still Look for You.
This year, she’s back with “Mosquitos,” a brassy, highly danceable new single that she says was written while she was “sweating out a bad breakup on the trails of Dupont State Forest.” The song features Phil Cook on slide guitar and a host of other local artists. In the defiant, disco-flecked music video, Anne-Claire’s vocals rise to a church-choir crescendo as she belts, “I knew it was done, it was done, it was done.”
While that might be the conclusion the singer reaches, the colorful video—produced by Wilson Hester and shot by Peyton Lea—makes a solid case for having fun even when you know that a romance has run its course.
You can catch Anne-Claire playing at a Hopscotch day party at Slim’s on Saturday, September 7 at 12:30 p.m.
