Thursday 10/15
Honeyjoon
7 p.m. | Fullsteam Theater, Durham
In her award-winning debut feature, filmmaker Lilian T. Mehrel tells the story of a mother-daughter duo trip to the Azores, on the anniversary of the family patriarch’s death. As each grapples with their private grief, a “hot philosophical surfer,” per the film copy, helps guide the way. (I watched the trailer and can confirm.) Put on by local group Two Beer Cinema Club, this screening will feature an in-person Q&A with writer/director Mehrel.
Friday 10/16
Murderer’s Row
6 p.m. | 800 North Person Street, Raleigh
One of the many things you can learn, in attending this baseball-themed art show, is what its title refers to: The all-timer 1927 New York Yankees lineup, which featured Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, long considered one of the most powerful in baseball history. Organized by legendary local signmaker Joseph Giampino, this Raleigh art show features over 29 local artists across numerous mediums. The event will be deejayed and feature beer from Trophy Brewing.
Saturday 10/17
Global Rhythms
1 p.m. | North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh
If the pre-Halloween festivities have grown too spooky, consider a night of reflections on love with local group Big Red Dance Project (BRDP). The performance, Of Love, features pieces set to five different 18th-century Italian arias and explores the different forms love can take. BRDP is a group that challenges stereotypes about what a modern dance company can look like, so expect the show’s solos and duets to showcase a diverse range of talented dancers. Admission is free—consider a stroll around the museum after.
Saturday 10/17
Bullhorn Fest
1-9:30 p.m. | Shadowbox Studio, Durham
While this month may be chock-full of music festival offerings, Bullhorn Fest is one that delivers local sound with community action. Alongside a twelve-artist lineup—featuring performances from Ken Moshesh and Friends, Son de Carolina, and Vito Dito, among others— the event features an art market, Vote Forward letter writing, a “Call-A-Rep zone,” local food and drink vendors, and more. All proceeds from ticket sales ($25 for adults) go to GatherGood’s Dream Weaver initiative, which raises funds for displaced Palestinian students.
sat & Sun 10/17-18
Disabled: A Love Story
Various times | von der Heyden Studio Theater, Durham
Uncomfortable questions and awkward experiences are front and center in writer and comedian Aaron Pang’s one-man show, up at Duke’s von der Heyden Studio Theater for a two-night run this weekend. Pang takes on the age-old quest for sex, love, and connection, but does so through the specific experience of disability. The runtime is about one hour; tickets are $10 for students and start at $30 for the public.
