Last Tuesday evening, a Raleigh police officer responding to a 911 call shot 26-year-old Javier Torres in the abdomen. (Torres survived.) Within a few hours, sparked by social media posts (wrongly) saying Torres was 16 and the police had shot him in the back, some 300 protesters amassed downtown and marched along Fayetteville Street. Deck-Brown blamed “reckless and false information” for the demonstration. Perhaps. But years of mistrust between the community and cops fueled the fire.
