THEREMIN: AN ELECTRONIC ODYSSEY
N.C. MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCESAn inventor obsessed with invention, Leon Theremin’s principle muses were electricity and music (“sound” is understating his case). In 1918, Theremin shaped the next century of music with the electronic instrument that took his name, took him into the high favor of Vladimir Lenin and to American acclaim and sold-out Carnegie Hall performances. Stephen M. Martin’s Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey, a 1994 Sundance award winner, works Theremin’s story with due fascination and appearances by instrument masters Clara Rockmore, Robert Moog and Brian Wilson. Film rolls for free at 7 tonight, with preceding shorts by A/V Geeks. Theremins and synthesizers courtesy of the Moog Foundation will be on hand and during tomorrow’s Wild Music Festival (11 a.m.-5 p.m., free), featuring Music Maker Relief Foundation artists and Dulcimer Dan. PROGRESS ENERGY CENTERGeorgia funnyman Arnez J. began his career telling jokes while working as a flight attendant. Presumably discovering it was more satisfying, and perhaps safer, to create turbulent laughter in nightclubs, he rose up through the circuit to coveted gigs at the Apollo and on Showtime.
