On April 14, 2009, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students, staff and faculty, as well as members of the town, made a unified statement denouncing hate speech in their community when they protested the anti-immigrant speech of former Colorado Congressperson Tom Tancredo. They stood together denouncing racism even in the face of opposition from the Chapel Hill Department of Public Safety and the university’s administration.
