In the May Democratic primary, Durham voters clearly signaled what direction they want for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, choosing Clarence Birkhead over incumbent Mike Andrews by a two-to-one margin.
We endorsed Birkhead then for his commitments to reducing the jail population, ceasing cooperation with ICE, and running a more transparent agency. Since the primary, Birkhead has picked up two write-in opponents: Paul Martin, a major with the Sheriff’s Office, and George Boykin, former chief of police at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh.
Once again, we endorse Birkhead.
