1. What do you believe are the most important issues facing the District Court? What are your top priorities or issues of concern for the coming term?

Overcrowded and too many cases not reached. Rise in violent juvenile crime and juvenile gang activity.

2. What qualifies you to serve?

Experience. My opponent, while well meaning, recently passed the bar in 2008. My record is one of hard work and accuracy. To my knowledge, my decisions have not been reversed by the Appellate Courts.

3. How do you define yourself politically?

Fiercely independent. Refuse to solicit or accept $ from lawyers. Only candidate in this race with that conviction. How does that impact your judicial approach? Balanced decisions without the pressure of favoritism.

5. What do you feel was the U.S. Supreme Court’s most important recent decision? Did you agree with the majority?

Caperton v. Massey I agree with the result, but am concerned, like Chief Justice Roberts, that the standard set is amorphous. They are all important. They are the law of the land.

6. Do you feel that North Carolina’s current system of judicial elections serves the state well? Are there other forms of selecting judges you feel would function better or worse than the current one?

Mixed bag. Political appointment has proved to be very political indeed.

No.

More screening and diversion of non-violent juveniles. More involvement of family and extended family.
