Hundreds of well-wishers, politicians, teachers and community members gathered on Driver Street to celebrate the opening of Maureen Joy Charter School in East Durham, which serves grades K–8.
Several local officials, including Mayor Bill Bell, spoke of the revitalizing role the school could have in “depressing” East Durham.
After being educated in a local church and in trailers for months, the students have come home to the heart of East Durham.
