We are living in a time when more families are looking for ways to save money. Energy efficiency and energy conservation is the first line of defense in keeping our utility costs down.
Duke Energy has a proposal before the North Carolina Utilities Commission that asks for money to teach energy conservation and gives the savings back to the utility company (“Save-a-Watt: Not the brightest bulb in the box,” Aug. 6). They want us to save money and then give the savings back to them. The problem with this proposal is that it shifts the burden onto the renting poor and people on fixed incomes who can’t afford to fix their homes. This proposal will have the poor subsidizing those who can make their home energy efficient and save energy. Does the Utilities Commission believe slumlords will fix up their properties when they don’t pay the utility bill?
