Long-serving N.C. State University Chancellor Randy Woodson is departing, with an announcement expected to come as soon as Thursday afternoon, according to three sources who spoke with The Assembly

Woodson has been the school’s top administrator since 2010, a tenure three times that of the average chancellor. Woodson ushered in significant increases in the N.C. State’s academic success and fundraising efforts, including improving graduation rates, hiring world-class professors, and attracting millions in research dollars.

Through the university’s “Think and Do” campaign, Woodson oversaw raising $2.1 billion for scholarships, research, programs, and facilities.

Woodson’s retirement brings the total number of chancellor openings in the UNC school system to four: UNC-Chapel Hill, Appalachian State University, and Elizabeth City State University. Four other campuses—North Carolina A&T University, Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina Central University, and UNC Asheville—have also appointed new leaders in 2024.
