Good morning, readers.

I hope you and yours fared well in the winter storm this weekend. Fortunately, the Triangle appears to have escaped the worst of winter storm Fern.

The freezing rain is done and this morning Duke Energy is reporting just a small number of power outages near Pittsboro and southern Wake County.

That said, officials are warning of very icy conditions on the roads today, especially in the Triangle, and urging residents to stay home if at all possible. Temps will dip into the single digits tomorrow morning, meaning we’re not totally in the clear yet.

Ahead of the storm, we reached out to someone with plenty of experience enduring days without heat, electricity, and streaming services for advice on how to get through it: Ali Williams, an experienced wilderness guide based in Raleigh who will appear on the new season of survival competition show Naked and Afraid.

“I’m really lucky that my work has allowed me to spend extended periods of time living in wild places and all of that knowledge and experience absolutely informs how I prepare for and behave during storms,” Williams told the INDY
